May 2024 Elections – Information for Candidates and Campaigners

The Notice of Election was published on Monday 18 March 2024, marking the formal start of the election process.

The nominations process is open and prospective candidates must submit a valid nomination paper to the Local Returning Officer by 16:00pm, Friday 5 April 2024, to be eligible to stand.

Nomination papers can only be accepted by formal hand delivery. Candidates (or their agents) are advised to book an appointment with the Electoral Services Team to do this. An informal check of nomination papers will be conducted prior to them being formally accepted. It is strongly advised that appointments are booked as early as possible to allow time for any corrections to be made, if necessary.

Appointments can be made by contacting the Electoral Services Team via email to electoral.registration@molevalley.gov.uk or by phone to 01306 879198. Appointments can only be made between the hours of 10:00am and 16:00pm.

The Statement of Persons Nominated will be published as soon as possible after the close of the nominations process, and no later than Monday 8 April 2024.

If you are standing for election as a District Candidate, you should read and have regard to the guidance for candidates and agents published by the Electoral Commission.

The Electoral Commission is hosting a pre-election webinar for candidates and agents taking part in Local and Parish elections in England on Thursday 2 May 2024.

The webinar will be held on Microsoft Teams between 13:00pm-14:00pm, Thursday 11 April 2024.

It will cover:

  • When the spending rules apply
  • How much you can spend
  • Notional spending rules
  • Who you can accept donations from
  • What you need to report after the election in your spending return
  • Guidance on harassment and intimidation at elections and when it goes too far.

Please complete the Electoral Commission’s form to confirm your attendance, and let them know if you have a specific question or topic you would like to be covered.

If you cannot make the time and date, please still register to attend – all registered attendees will receive a copy of the slides and a copy of the Q&A from the day.

Candidates, agents and campaigners at the District elections on Thursday 2 May 2024 must follow the Electoral Commission’s Code of Conduct for Campaigners.

The Code provides as to what is, and is not, acceptable behaviour during the lead-up to polling day on Thursday 2 May 2024.

The Code also provides information relating to the legislative changes regarding the handling of postal voting documents. Further information about the changes to postal voting is available on the Electoral Commission’s website.
