Temporary Pavement Licences

To help the hospitality industry recover from the effect of the Covid-19 lockdown, the Government has temporarily relax planning and licensing laws to makes it easier for premises serving food and drink such as bars, restaurants and pubs to seat and serve customers outdoors.

The Business and Planning Act has created a temporary fast-track process for these businesses to obtain a “pavement licence”, for the placement of removable furniture such as tables and chairs on the pavement outside their premise which will enable them to maximise their capacity whilst adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Deemed planning consent is granted as part of the Temporary Pavement Licence process. Unless otherwise specified the licence will expire 30 September 2024. The cost of the licence is £100.

Please read the guidance on pavement licensing before applying – you will need to supply information as part of your application, and if it is not provided in full it may result in delays to your application being granted or it being refused.

On the day you apply for a Temporary Pavement Licence you must display a site notice on the premises readily so that the notice is visible to, and can be read easily by, members of the public who are not on the premises. A Microsoft Word template for the notice is available for you to use.
