Appealing a Council Tax Decision
What to do if you think your Council Tax bill is wrong
If you think your Council Tax bill is wrong, please tell us why and provide any information to support this. We will then review your account and make any relevant adjustments.
How to Appeal
When can i appeal?
You can appeal to the Valuation Tribunal Service (VTS) if you think your Council Tax bill is wrong, and we have not agreed with your view. The process is free and independent of MVDC though you must have already contacted us to explain what the problem is. If you are not happy with our decision (which we must make within 2 months), you can make an appeal. You can only appeal if your name appears on the Council Tax bill.
Reasons to appeal include the following:
- you should not be responsible for Council Tax on a property (this is called Council Tax liability)
- your property should be exempt from Council Tax (e.g. because you consider the property to be )
- we have decided not to award you a discount or reduction and you do not agree with our decision
you disagree with the date we have given on a completion notice (an appeal under these grounds must be made within 28 days of the date of the completion notice being served) The gov.uk website provides guidance about appealing a Council Tax bill or fine.
How to appeal
You can only appeal if your name appears on the Council Tax bill. You will need to provide the VTS with the following information:
- your surname
- the postcode for the property
- the Council Tax reference number, found on the bill
- your contact details, for example a daytime phone number or an email address
- the reason why you want to appeal
You can also provide any evidence that you believe supports your appeal.
To make your appeal, you will need to fill in a Valuation Tribunal Service appeal form.
What happens next?
The VTS will look at the decision again to see if it should be changed. They will then contact you with the outcome.
You must keep on paying your Council Tax as shown on your most recent bill while your appeal is being considered.
If your appeal is upheld and you have overpaid any Council Tax, we will refund you.
Appeals to the Valuation Office Agency or Valuation Tribunal Service are free.
