Further Information: Surrey Heritage’s project Surrey in the Great War: A County Remembers has, over the four-year centenary commemoration, been exploring the wartime stories of Surrey’s people and places. The project team has been on the hunt for information about the county during the war period and beyond, up to 1922: stories of civilians, nurses, munitions workers and soldiers, and more…; information about village and town life; and thematic research into such aspects as the role of women, agriculture, and faith groups. An invitation! On Saturday 20 July 2019 we will be hosting our finale event, War and Peace in Surrey, 1914-1919, at Dorking Halls (11am-4.30pm). A century on from Britain’s ‘Peace Day’, when the nation celebrated the official end of the war, join us to browse exhibitions, listen to talks, and experience the sights and sounds of wartime Surrey through film, a sound installation, re-enactments and children’s activities. Come and enjoy displays showcasing the work of our volunteers & partners from across Surrey, children’s activities (including mini-digs with Surrey County Archaeological Unit), wartime Surrey on film, and talks on topics such as Surrey training camps, women in wartime, local war photographer Ivan Bawtree, Dorking during the war, the county’s Red Cross, and the Royal Army Medical Corps (by Andy Robertshaw). All are welcome to attend this free event - don’t miss this showcase of four years’ worth of poignant, fascinating and surprising discoveries!
