The issue of airport development is of importance to residents and businesses in the District, as the southern boundary of Mole Valley borders Gatwick Airport.
Gatwick Airport Master Plan
In October 2018, Gatwick Airport Limited published a Draft Master Plan for consultation which set out proposals for the airport's ongoing development and growth over the next 16 years. There are three 'growth scenarios' listed in the Master Plan, including an option to utilise the emergency runway for departures alongside the existing main runway. MVDC submitted a comprehensive response to the consultation which can be viewed below, in the 'Downloads' section. The Master Plan was confirmed in July 2019.
Gatwick Airport Development Consent Order
Gatwick Airport Limited has started the process of preparing an application for a Development Consent Order (DCO), a type of planning consent that is granted by the Secretary of State, to be able to use the existing emergency runway for departures. More information on this process is available to view on the Planning Inspectorate (PINS)'s website.
As part of this process, in September 2019 Gatwick Airport Limited submitted a Scoping Report to the Planning Inspectorate, requesting a Scoping Opinion on the extent of the potential environmental impacts to be considered as part of the DCO process. MVDC's response to a consultation by PINS on this Scoping Report was submitted in September 2019, and is available to view below, in the 'Downloads' section. The Planning Inspectorate adopted their Scoping Opinion in October 2019, available to view on their website here.
MVDC will engage with Gatwick Airport Limited and other relevant stakeholders throughout the DCO process, prior to arriving at a definitive position on the proposed development.
