Cllr Simon Ling
Simon was brought up in Oundle in Northamptonshire and attended Cambridge University where he met his future wife Cynthia. After university he spent one year working as a volunteer in India for the Oxford Mission to Calcutta, (of which he is now UK Chairman) and then started his training as a Chartered Accountant in London, qualifying in 1970.
Cynthia and Simon married in 1969 when they moved to Ashtead. Their first child died after a few hours but their other two arrived safely in 1973 and 1975. A year later they moved to Sheffield where Simon worked in the local office of the same firm of accountants.
In 1982 he joined a small firm of accountants in Wallington, and moved back to Ashtead where they have remained ever since. He took over the firm on the death of the senior partner (just before his arrival) and ran it until 2006 when he sold the business and retired from practice, but took up part time employment and consultancy.
Apart from the Oxford Mission, Simon has been involved in other charities including Family Education Trust and South West Thames Kidney Fund.
He played squash until 1995 when back problems prevented further participation, but remains a keen orienteer, plays croquet and paints in water colour.
Simon was elected as Vice-Chairman of the Council for 2016/2017 and was elected Chairman of the Council for 2017/2018
