Burglar Alarms

Audible intruder alarms are widely used to protect property from unauthorised entry and are often required by insurance companies. Burglar alarms that are sounding should be reported to the Police in case criminal activity is taking place but it may not be possible for the police to respond.

The Council can take action against alarm systems that sound for long periods of time, causing serious noise disturbance to neighbours, and where there is no evidence of a break-in.

Keyholders

If you have an Intruder Alarm at your property it is advisable to contact SurPol Keyholder service. It is also advisable that your alarm is fitted with a 20 minute cut off facility.

Enabling Surrey Police, whenever necessary, to gain emergency access to your property during your absence can often save damage as well as time and inconvenience. This applies to all property in the Surrey Police area - not just those fitted with alarm systems.

Simply entering your contact details and those of two reliable persons into the new and innovative SurPol keyholder system allows you to do just that whilst leaving you totally in control of your personal record.

Subscribing to the SurPol Keyholder service is something that Surrey Police encourage you to positively consider.

The service has an annual administration charge from as little as £10.00 (+VAT) for individual householders. Each registration results in a £1 donation in support of local community Neighbourhood Watch initiatives.

If you wish to register for the SurPol service please do not contact Surrey Police directly. Registration can only be completed via the registration hotline - Online, fax or by post.

Alarms causing a noise nuisance

If an alarm system is reported as causing a noise nuisance, the Council will try to contact a keyholder so that the problem can be resolved quickly and with the minimum of fuss through Surpol. If a Council officer is satisfied that an alarm is causing a noise nuisance and is unable to contact a keyholder within a reasonable period of time to silence the alarm, then formal action will be taken to abate the nuisance. An Abatement Notice requiring the alarm to be silenced will be served and if it is not complied with an Alarm Engineer will also be asked to silence the alarm and the police will be informed.

The Occupier of the premises concerned will be responsible for reimbursing the Council for all costs reasonably incurred in abating the nuisance.

What do I do if I want to complain?

If you wish to make a complaint, please use the complaint form which can be downloaded or viewed from this page.
