Supporting Local Businesses, Encouraging Local Shopping

Free Christmas Parking Offer - Three Full Days in December

This year, free Christmas parking has been extended to three full Saturdays in all Mole Valley District Council owned car parks on the 1st, 8th and 15th December.

These Saturdays have been selected so that residents can spend longer in Mole Valley's town centres and do more of their Christmas shopping locally, without the worry of paying for parking.

Councillor David Hawksworth CBE, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing said, "We are extending our offer from three half days to three full days this year so that people can spend more time in our town centres, eat and drink in the local restaurants and cafes and generally have a better shopping experience.

"We are very aware of the challenges faced by our high street businesses at this time, and are anxious to do what we can to support them. Retailers have to confront a rapidly changing environment, with the rise of online shopping, high rents and business rates. These dates have been selected in consultation with local business groups, and we trust residents will make the most of these days and come in to shop and support our local traders. We are also waiving charges for special weekday evenings for seasonal events in Ashtead, Bookham and Leatherhead.

"We are currently supporting local businesses via our Economic Prosperity Strategy, and this year have started investing in upgrading our own car parks.

"We encourage local traders to advertise these dates and let their customers know about them well in advance, not forgetting parking is also free all day on Sundays year-round.

"Our parking machines will be clearly marked with posters advertising the free parking days on these dates, but costs prevent us from 'switching them off' entirely. If any money is inserted on the free days, those funds will be divided between the Chairman's charities, which this year are The Motor Neurone Disease Association and Rainbow Trust.

"It may be a little early to say 'Merry Christmas', but we hope that these free parking dates will make local shopping easier for everyone and be a real boost for traders this festive season. I look forward to feedback from both businesses and residents in the New Year."
