Allotments provide the opportunity for fresh air and exercise for those interested in growing fruit, vegetables and flowers. They also provide the chance to make new friends with other like-minded people. Our allotments do not have to be used solely for producing crops; many of our plotholders use them as quiet garden areas, for relaxing and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Don't forget that any surplus crops can usually be frozen ensuring a constant supply of home grown fruit and vegetables, whatever the time of year.

Mole Valley Leisure Services manages 10 allotment sites, totalling nearly 50 acres (20 hectares). They vary considerably in size and character, with some on light, free draining soils and others on heavy clay. Some of the sites are relatively remote and distinctly rural in character, while others are set close to centres of population. All our allotments have mains water provided at no additional charge, and some have good car parking facilities. Subject to availability, allotment plots are let as full or half plots. A full plot is 10 rods, which is approximately 30m x 10m and a half plot is five rods. Rents are payable annually with discounts for pensioners and the unemployed.

In addition to these allotments listed below, there are a number of other sites within the District controlled by Parish Councils. Details of these sites may be obtained by application to the appropriate Parish Council Clerk.

Ashtead Allotments, Ashtead (6 acres - 2.45 hectares)

These allotments are situated on the south side of the main Leatherhead-Ashtead road, adjacent to Ashtead Hospital. The allotments have a steady fall from south to north, and the soil is free draining and chalky. They are served by a central access road and some car parking space is provided. There are 92 plots at this site.

Eastwick Allotments, Great Bookham (6.5 acres - 2.6 hectares)

These allotments are situated in Eastwick Road and are readily accessible from the whole of Great Bookham. The main access is from Keswick Road where a track leads up through the middle of the allotments. The building on site is run by the Eastwick Allotment & Garden Association who sell a range of horticultural supplies. The soil is light, chalky and free draining, in contrast to many of the gardens in the surrounding area. This allotment site contains 92 plots, most of which are split into half plots. At Eastwick we have a policy of not allowing sheds to be erected.

Little Bookham Allotments, Little Bookham (4.5 acres - 1.8 hectares)

These allotments are the newest in the District, having been established in 1975. This is perhaps our most secluded site, on the edge of Bookham Common, to the west of Bookham Grange Hotel. Car parking is available on site, and the soil varies from light at the top to clay lower down. There are 51 plots at this site.

Barnett Wood Lane Allotments, Leatherhead (10 acres - 4 hectares)

These allotments are the last surviving part of the old Poors Allotment land, which originally stretched from the railway line to the rear of Garlands Road, an area of about 23 acres. Now only the central section remains as allotments, with vehicular access and parking from the Leatherhead Bypass and pedestrian access from Barnett Wood Lane. Immediately adjoining the car park are the buildings belonging to the Leatherhead Horticultural Society, who have a large local membership. This allotment site has 120 plots in total. The soil is fine and easily workable.

Highlands Road Allotments, Leatherhead (2 acres - 0.8 hectares)

These allotments are located between Highlands Road and Fortyfoot Road, with pedestrian access from both ends. Vehicular access is from Fortyfoot Road. This small site has always been popular on account of the peaceful situation, and is readily accessible from the south side of Leatherhead. There are 25 plots here, and the soil is medium to heavy and good growing.

Coldharbour Lane Allotments, Dorking (7 acres - 3 hectares)

These allotments are situated to the south west of Dorking, immediately adjoining Coldhabrour Lane. There is a car park at the Coldharbour Lane entrance and also pedestrian access from Ridgeway Road. There are 86 plots at this site and the soil is mainly of a clay and sand mix, and very good growing.

Pixholme Grove Allotments, Dorking (1 acres - 0.4 hectares)

This small site has always been very popular. It adjoins the Pixham Lane Sports Ground and is reached from Pixholme Grove. The allotments are divided into two parts by the public footpath which continues on to Lincoln Road. There is no vehicular access and water is provided by one standpipe on each part of the site. There are 15 plots here and the soil is heavy but very good.

Ranmore Road Allotments, Dorking (3 acres - 1.3 hectares)

This site has not been in use since December 2003.

St Pauls Road Allotments, Dorking (5 acres - 2 hectares)

This site is on an elevated position, just to the south of the town of Dorking and is reached by a track leading off St Pauls Road West, immediately adjoining St Pauls School. The allotments are located on the northern slope of the hill immediately below the Glory Wood and have a light, greensand soil. There is only very limited car parking at these allotments. The site contains 57 plots.

Bentsbrook Allotments, North Holmwood(1.8 acres - 0.7 hectares)

The Bentsbrook allotments are located to the south of the main A24 at North Holmwood and run down to the Bents Brook. The site is on a south facing slope. There is vehicular access from the main road and also pedestrian access across the stream from the footpath leading off Holmesdale Road. There are no car parking facilities at this site. The soil is clay and there are 22 plots here.

Mole Valley District Council Allotment Strategy 2006

An Allotments Strategy was prepared and ratified in March 2006 and looked at all sites (Council and non-Council owned) in Mole Valley.  A range of options for the improvement of existing sites, the need for concerted promotion in some areas and the possible rationalisation of some of the less-well used sites across the District were among the issues looked at.  The recommendations of this Strategy are being implemented as time and resources allow.

A copy of this Strategy can be viewed by downloading the file to the right of this page.
