Christmas Winter Wonders Weekend - SUNDAY CANCELLED

Due to dangerously high winds predicted for Sunday we are cancelling our Winter Wonders weekend event on Sunday 10 December.

The Santa's Grotto will still run but has moved location to Dorking Sports Centre, Reigate Road, Dorking RH4 1SN. If you have a Santa's Grotto ticket please arrive at the Sports Centre at your appointed Grotto time slot. Santa and his elves are looking forward to seeing you there.

Please note the event will still run on Saturday 9 December.

We have taken this decision based on information provided by the Met Office Advisor for Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire & Isle of Wight.

We will post updates on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

We are offering to refund both event day tickets and parking tickets for 10 December. Please contact Dorking Halls directly via boxoffice@molevalley.gov.uk or call 01306 881717 to arrange your refund.

Dorking Halls will be offering a 15% discount on Café products to event ticket holders on Sunday.

We apologise for the disappointment this will cause, we and all our volunteers and supporters are really disappointed too.  Please do keep an eye on our social media for future events.

FAQ's

What does my Winter Wonders event day ticket entitle me to?

Each ticket for the Winter Wonders event covers you for a full day of activity. You can attend anything or everything in the Entertainment programme (above) on the day your ticket is booked for. You can also visit our lovely family of reindeer, enjoy having a go at free Christmas crafts, shopping amongst our local stalls and buying food and drink from our local suppliers. You are free to arrive and leave at any time that suits you.

For a £5 donation try out wreath making under the expert tuition of Surrey Art School in our wreath making tent, open 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm.

Please note there will be a limited number of wreaths possible to be made on the day.

This ticket on its own is not valid for entry into Santa's Grotto unless you are an adult accompanying a child who has a valid Santa's Grotto ticket.

What does my Santa's Grotto ticket entitle me to?

If you have booked your child into Santa's Grotto this entitles your child to a guided walk through the Gardens of Deepdene to the historic Grotto which Santa is visiting this weekend. Santa and his elves have been decorating and gathering little presents ready for little visitors. Once at the Grotto your child will gather inside with a group of other small visitors for a visit with Santa. Each child will then get a present and have the opportunity for a photograph with Santa.

Please note that the path up to Santa is on a firm path surface. There is one short flight of steps but there is an alternative detour to avoid the steps that the elves can show you. The route is steadily uphill the whole way so no need to rush.

Where do we meet Santa?

At your appointed time meet our Christmas elves at the elf-meeting point on the grass area known as the parterre near the statue of Coady the lion. It will be clearly sign-posted and only a couple of metres from the welcome gate at the entrance to the Gardens from the car park of Kuoni travel. There will be volunteers at the gate to point you in the right direction.

If you are walking rather than parking at the Kuoni carpark please allow enough time to get to the site. If walking from the town centre then please allow at least 20 minutes to get from Dorking Halls to the Kuoni entrance (download map). If walking from the South of Dorking we would recommend passing the Trail entrance and entering via the Kuoni entrance (download map).

How many adults can accompany children to the Grotto?

We have not limited the number of adults who can visit with each child with a valid ticket however please be aware there is limited space in the Grotto so not everyone will fit in!

When and where can I park?

When purchasing your event ticket you were asked if you require parking. If yes then you will have purchased a parking space for £2 in the Kuoni car park, RH5 4AZ, right next to the Gardens. Thanks to the generosity of Kuoni for this event.

Your parking ticket is valid for the whole day for which you have booked and you can park anytime between 9.30am and 3pm. The gates will officially open at 10am to all visitors on foot but it is possible to get parked early.

If you do not want to purchase a parking ticket - or they are sold out - the nearest car parks are listed below and take coins for payment or can be paid via the RingGo service.

Dorking Halls - RH4 1SD 15 minutes walk to The Trail

Pippbrook Council offices - RH4 1SJ 15 minutes walk to The Trail

St Martin's Walk - RH4 1DX 20 Minute walk to The Trail

Parking is FREE in these car parks on Sundays.

Are they real reindeer?

Yes there will be 3 live reindeer brought from the herd at the Reindeer centre www.reindeercentre.co.uk. They will be within their own paddock an there will be two handlers with the reindeer to tell you more about them. Please be respectful of these lovely animals and take care to wash your hands at the wash station provided if you pet them.

Can I bring my dog?

For this event we ask that only guide and assistance dogs are brought.

At all other times of the year we are happy for well-behaved dogs on leads to visit the Trail. Find out more on our visitors with dogs page.

What should I wear on the day?

Please check the weather forecast before the day and dress appropriately. Given the time of year please do wrap up warm!

Will I be able to purchase food and drink on the day?

There will be food and drink from several local suppliers on the day.

Allez Nutrition

Local food van will be supplying a delicious menu including hot soup and rolls, hot filled rolls, savoury pastries, pasta pots, salad, mince pies, Christmas cookies and homemade cakes. Enjoy mulled wine, hot chocolate, barista coffee, plus a range of teas and cold drinks.

The Reigate Pancake Company

Will be serving tasty crepe with fillings including lemon and sugar, jam, maple syrup or nutella.

Look out for additional treats from The Vicar's Kitchen and Lizy's lovelies on Sunday!

Will you have toilets there?

On the day we will have toilets available in the car park adjacent to the entrance to the Gardens from the car park.

Is there disabled access to this event?

There are 6 disabled parking spaces available on the day right next to the Garden entrance within Kuoni car park for Blue Badge holders. The parking in general is very close to the Garden entrance. Please bring your badge and show it to the volunteers on site as you arrive who will point you in the right direction.

The Gardens are then accessed from this car park by a short packed gravel slope and a brief section (c. 2m) of smooth grass. Once in the Gardens the majority of the valley can be traversed on level packed gravel paths. The path up to Santa's Grotto is on a firm path surface. There is one short flight of steps but there is an alternative detour to avoid the steps that the elves can show you. The route is steadily uphill the whole way.

The valley is naturally very steep sided so there is a reasonably steep slope to be negotiated along these paths to reach the top. A full description of the paths with maps showing the Gardens is available on our Access page.

A disabled toilet is available in the car park adjacent to the entrance to the Gardens from the car park right next to the disabled parking.

Will there be anyone filming at the event?

THE DEEPDENE TRAIL WILL BE FILMING AT THIS EVENT. BY ATTENDING THE EVENT YOU ACCEPT THAT YOU CAN BE FILMED DURING THE EVENT AND THAT THESE IMAGES MAY WELL BE BROADCAST, USED ON SOCIAL MEDIA OR IN PRINTED MEDIA.

Will I be able to sit down there?

There are a few benches scattered around the Gardens, picnic benches and seating by the food van. There will be some priority seating on hay bales near the performance areas in the valley but please ensure these are free for those in need. There will be seating in the craft tents and Santa's Grotto.

What do we do with any rubbish on The Trail?

On the day we will have bins available in the car park as you exit the Gardens. When visiting the Trail at any time out-with the event we ask that you please take your rubbish home with you.

Can I smoke?

There is no smoking within the Gardens during this event.

Will my children be able to scoot round it?

The Trail is not suitable for children's scooters. There is much uneven ground and grassy parts on The Trail which will inevitably mean that much more carrying of scooters than scooting would be required.

Can I cycle around The Trail?

In short we ask that you do not. The new paths have been repaired and renewed as a historic walking Trail and whilst we welcome everyone, we are not recommending that anyone cycles The Trail.

We are aware there are many beautiful cycling opportunities throughout Mole Valley that are better suited to cycling than The Deepdene Trail.

I would like to donate money to future projects on The Deepdene Estate, who should I talk to?

On the day we will have a cash collection area at the Organisers tent for donations for further events and conservation work on the Trail. If you would like to discuss other kinds of donation please call us directly on 01306 885001 or email us at thedeepdenetrail@molevalley.gov.uk

I'd like to volunteer with The Friends of Deepdene, how do I do that?

If you would like to volunteer with The Friends of Deepdene, please contact us on thedeepdenetrail@molevalley.gov.uk or 01306 885001.

I'd like to organise a special group visit and tour, who do I contact?

Please get in touch with Dorking Museum who provide guided Group Tours available on any date to suit you, and regular walks open to all will be offered throughout the year for a small donation towards the Museum.

Visit Dorking Museum's website to find out more and book your tour.

Can I hold an event on The Deepdene Trail?

We will be accepting requests for events, please email thedeepdenetrail@molevalley.gov.uk with your proposed idea.

Who do I tell if I see someone damaging The Trail?

If you do see The Trail being damaged in any way please contact us on thedeepdenetrail@molevalley.gov.uk or 01306 885001.

Can I fly a drone over The Trail land?

The use of drones is a developing topic and is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Drones should not be flown over people and as The Trail is not staffed we have no way of guaranteeing at any time that it will be safe for them to be used on The Trail.

We also have concerns that pilots of drones do not necessarily have suitable insurance if their drone were to cause damage, or injure somebody on The Trail.

Therefore we ask that only our own contractors who are regulated and insured fly drones over The Trail.

Once more guidance is issued by the Civil Aviation Authority we will review our position on this.

Have a question we haven't answered here?

Please either call us on 01306 879273 or email us at thedeepdenetrail@molevalley.gov.uk and we will be happy to help.
