June 2017

These are exciting times for Mole Valley and I am very proud of all that we have achieved together since I joined the organisation in September 2012. After a great deal of consideration, I have taken the decision to challenge myself elsewhere and will be taking up the position as Joint Chief Executive of Cherwell District Council and South Northamptonshire Council from July. I am of course sad to leave this wonderful district behind, but I do so safe in the knowledge that the organisation will be in the very capable hands of interim Chief Executive, Jack Straw. It has been a pleasure to work with, and for the benefit of, so many local communities in Mole Valley. I wish you all the very best in the future.

It's felt like a long time coming, but summer is finally here, although the wind and the rain have briefly returned! I hope we can now look forward to an enjoyable several months of hot sun. Summer is also a period which sees the return of many a favourite annual celebration in the District, and one or two new one's for you to look forward to.

Following a great deal of fun, enjoyment and hard work in the free training sessions held over the past few months, hundreds of young people will be representing Team Mole Valley at this year's Specsavers Surrey Youth Games. The County-wide mini-Olympics take place on the weekend of 17 and 18 June. Let the sporting theatre commence! I am sure you will join me in wishing our young competitors the very best of luck - and quite certain they will do the district and, most importantly, themselves proud.

The very same weekend, theatre of a very different kind will be taking place as the atmospheric Deepdene Trail's gardens welcomes live Shakespeare performances. The renowned poet and playwright's best loved characters and plays look set to be given a new backdrop in the newly restored gardens, embattled tower and restored grotto! Tickets are still available and it promises to be a marvellous event for the whole family to enjoy.

That takes care of June, and there's even more to look forward to in July as Mole Valley once again welcomes the Prudential Ride-London-Surrey 100 event on Sunday 30 July through the district. You are also sure to have a quacking (forgive me!) good time on Sunday 2 July, at the annual Duck Race in Leatherhead. Both events are fantastic fun, be it supporting a family cycling fanatic or a plastic duck from the river bank - come along and enjoy the experience.

So my time has come to sign off and hand over to Jack...!

Yvonne Rees
Chief Executive
