Cllr Vivienne Michael
Vivienne was elected as District Councillor for the Okewood Ward in May 2003 and has been a Member of the Council's Executive since 2010. She is currently the Leader of the Council.
Vivienne has represented Mole Valley on numerous public bodies including the Board of the Surrey Hills AONB, the Mole Valley Arts Forum and the Gatwick Airport Consultative Committee. She currently represents the Council on several bodies including the Local Government Association's General Assembly and the East Surrey Community Safety Partnership.
Vivienne has lived in Mole Valley for over 30 years, moving from Dorking to Charlwood 25 years ago. Her son, David, attended Pixham Lane Primary, Reigate St Mary's Preparatory and Reigate Grammar Schools. After graduating in Botany, Zoology and History and Philosophy of Science, Vivienne trained as a microbiologist and undertook research at the Central Public Health Laboratories. An interest in improving public understanding of science led to a career in media relations and journalism during which she gained experience in both the corporate and public sectors and wrote on health and family matters for several national newspapers and magazines.
Vivienne has over 30 years' experience of policy-making, management, communications and fundraising in the voluntary sector and was, until recently, Chief Executive of the national medical research charity, Deafness Research UK. She has served on the Executive Council of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), the Board of the United Kingdom Council on Deafness (UKOD) and the Council of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves Officers' Association. She is currently an adviser to the UCL Ear Institute, a member of the Advisory Board of UCL's Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL) and a consultant to the charity sector specialising in governance, communications, fundraising and grant-making.
