Cllr Peter Stanyard
After school in Croydon and University at Southampton, Peter joined the Industrial Relations team in the Ford Motor Company at their Tractor Plant in Basildon in 1966. There he gained practical experience in all aspects of Personnel Management. There was some emphasis on conflict resolution at the time. His development was helped by the attention of a number of mentors. From Ford he moved to a job as Personnel Manager to the head office of the British Leyland Motor Corporation. This was followed in 1973 by a move to the London advertising industry where he gained his first experience of acquisitions and mergers but also exercised his industrial relations skills as the lead negotiator for the advertising agencies caught up in the Wapping disputes. In quieter periods he sat on the national training committee for the advertising and communications industry.
The construction industry then called and in 1977 he joined Tarmac's specialist contracting division as Personnel manager in its roofing company and later as head of personnel for the division until becoming Group personnel Director of Cape plc producing fire-resistant building materials, installation and scaffolding throughout the world. During this phase of his career he chaired the training committee for the roofing industry as well as being chair of the employers' side of the national negotiating council for roofing.
In 1991 he rejoined Tarmac in the team that floated Ruberoid plc, until in 1997 he formed his own consultancy providing Human Resources expertise to a portfolio of companies in a wide cross section of industries. He was hired by the Construction Industry Training Board to research and write national training plans for three sections of the specialist contracting industry. Peter has appeared in many Employment Tribunals across the country with great success.
He is married to Judy, has two grown up married daughters and four grandchildren. He is a Freeman of the City of London, a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, having been awarded the Badge of Merit and sat on the Institute Council for three years. He is a former Fellow of the Institute of Roofing.
He is on the fund raising team for the new church hall at St Giles' Church in Ashtead and is secretary of the Patients Participation Group at St Stephen's House Surgery in Ashtead. He is an Honorary Steward for the Rugby Football Union at Twickenham.
