The issue of airport development is of importance to residents and businesses in Mole Valley.
The Airports Commission was established in 2012 to examine the need for additional runway capacity in the UK. It published its final report in July 2015. The Commission has recommended that a third runway at Heathrow is the best option for providing additional runway capacity. The recommendation is contingent on a package of measures to mitigate the environmental effects.
Mole Valley's Position
Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) welcomes the Airports Commission's recommendation. A third runway at Heathrow is preferable to residents in Mole Valley who were concerned that a second runway at Gatwick would have significant local impact. The proposed expansion at Heathrow will also have greater economic benefit both locally and nationally.
In its response to the Commission (see 'Downloads'), MVDC emphasised the need to improve road and rail links as an integral part of Heathrow airport expansion. It will continue to lobby for road and rail improvements to cater for growth at Heathrow and to alleviate current congestion.
Gatwick will remain an important international airport. MVDC believes that expansion at Heathrow should not overshadow the need for improved road and rail links to Gatwick as it continues to grow as a one-runway, two terminal airport.
In December 2015 the Government accepted in principle the case for airport expansion in the south-east, and the short list of three options identified by the Airports Commission. A decision on the location of additional runway capacity was delayed pending further work on air quality and greenhouse gas emissions, which concluded in 2016.
