Children Enjoy First Leatherhead Junior Parkrun

On Sunday 22 September, just over 80 children took part in Leatherhead's first junior parkrun. This free timed 2km event is open to all aged four to 14, including families and parents, and will take place at Leatherhead Leisure Centre every Sunday at 9am.

The course follows around the leisure centre's attractive grounds on trail paths and grass, taking in views of the River Mole.

This event follows last year's launch of the now popular Mole Valley parkrun at Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking. The 80th Mole Valley parkrun took place on Saturday 7 September with a record 406 runners. The event averages 285 runners a week, and this year the Guardian newspaper named it one of the 10 most scenic parkruns in the world.

Parkruns and junior parkruns are free, weekly, volunteer-led community events, and there are close to 2,000 locations worldwide. Participants can walk, jog, run or volunteer, enjoying benefits such as improved physical health and self-confidence, plus spending time in the outdoors.

Councillor David Draper, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Mole Valley District Council, said, "We believe that residents should have as many opportunities as possible to live healthier lives. These parkruns have a wonderful atmosphere, and bring people of all ages together.

"We work with our partners to offer a number of initiatives that help all ages get more active. To see what's on offer, visit molevalley.gov.uk/keepfit."

Taking part in a parkrun is easy. Just register once online at parkrun.org.uk/register, then print a copy of the barcode and bring it along to each run.
