Statement (29.11.17): Royal Oak Pub in North Leatherhead

Councillor Duncan Irvine, Executive Member for Planning, said: "Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) has been made aware that work to demolish the Royal Oak pub in North Leatherhead was undertaken by a developer last week.

An application for Prior Approval has to be submitted and approved by the local planning authority before a public house can be demolished. The application should detail how the proposed demolition work is to be carried out and any future restoration plans for the site.

On this occasion, MVDC received no such application from the developer. The demolition work was therefore unauthorised, but not an illegal act. The Royal Oak is not a Listed Building, nor is it in a Conservation Area or an Asset of Community Value and, having given careful consideration to this case, MVDC could only have refused the work on the grounds of how the demolition was to be carried out. Whilst we understand the upset this has caused some members of the local community, MVDC will not be taking enforcement action against the developer."
