Chairman of MVDC
On 22 May 2018, Councillor Raj Haque was elected as Chairman of the Council for the municipal year 2018-19. The Chairman of Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) is a civic role and is similar to a Mayor in that the Chairman is the first representative of the district.
The role is ceremonial and the Chairman has no decision-making powers unlike the role of an elected Mayor, which exists in some parts of the UK.
Throughout his year as Chairman, Councillor Haque will be attending local community events throughout the district and representing Mole Valley at events throughout Surrey. If you are planning an event and would like the Chairman to attend, please send an invitation (via Pippbrook) or contact the Civic Support Staff.
With the redevelopment of the Football Stadium at Meadowbank due for completion later this year, the Chairman hopes that his year will have a strong focus on sporting activities.
Additionally, Councillor Haque has chosen to support two charities during his year as Chairman.
Rainbow Trust is a national charity with strong local connections (The Surrey team is based in Leatherhead) that supports families with children up to the age of 18 who have a life threatening or terminal illness and are in the greatest need. The Charity provides Family Support Workers who support the whole family at home, in hospital and in the community.
The Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) Supports people suffering from MND, which describes a group of diseases that affect the nerves (motor neurones) in the brain and spinal cord that tell your muscles what to do. MNDA is a national charity but supports sufferers locally, and their families in living with the condition through direct advice, contact and support.
The current Vice-Chairman of the Council is Councillor Mary Huggins.
